CHRONICLE-TRIBUNE (Marion, Ind.)
Hired straight out of college, Gina began her journalism career in January 1999. Hired as a news copy editor and page designer, Gina worked her way up to the front-page shift, which made her responsible for designing the newspaper's front page while coordinating news wire content throughout the rest of the paper.
In November 1999, Gina was promoted to assistant city editor, managing six reporters, editing copy, writing and reporting her own stories and otherwise assisting with the newspaper's local coverage, including award-winning "Moment of Truth" project, 10-month series that examined problems such as illiteracy and unemployment in the Marion area. The series went on to win a National Journalism Award from the Scripps Howard Foundation and was runner-up Batten award for civic journalism from the Pew Center.
